Seeking Alpha Stamp of Approval

Personal, Site 4 Comments »

CheersI received The Gold Standard Seeking Alpha Certification today. I have been submitting a few articles to them here and there. I enjoy their site, so I am happy to contribute. I am proudly displaying the badge in my sidebar.

I started this site to help myself and to help others. For myself, I wanted to help solidify my investing philosophy and standardize my process. I enjoy receiving feedback (even the harsh criticisms), because in the end I just want to keep learning. I don’t profess to be any kind of expert. For everyone else, I hope you gain something form reading the site and the comments.

Everyone have a safe weekend and a Happy New Year!

Thoroughbreds Out of the Gate

Investing, Site No Comments »

The buy order went through this morning for the Thoroughbred High Yield Dividend Folio. All the data has been updated to the database. The automated stock price update worked like a charm at 5:00PM. Cheers!

And Their Off…

I spent the better part of today working on the Thoroughbred High Yield Dividend Folio page and the back end. The first decision I had to make involved adding the Folio to the WordPress or making a different page. In the end, I felt it was more secure to add it to another page. If I wanted to add it to WordPress, then I would have to enable PHP scripting in WordPress and use a third party plugin. That didn’t appeal to me.

I decided to put all the stock information into a database. If I were to rely on Yahoo stock quote updates for the page, then it takes about 20 seconds or longer for the page to load. I wrote a script that updates the stock information to my database every day around 5:00PM eastern time. The database query on the Thoroughbred page for the stock information is lightening fast, so the page loads quickly.

I setup a window buy order at FOLIOfn for all the Thoroughbred stocks. The purchase should go through around 11:00 AM eastern tomorrow. Everyone will be able to track the progress from the Thoroughbred High Yield Dividend Folio page starting late tomorrow night. I will have to put the share and cost basis information in the database sometime tomorrow evening.

After this initial setup, the only maintenance I will have to perfom will be entering dividends as they are received. This shouldn’t be too bad, but I sure wish there was a way to automate it. As I have said on here before, I am _lazy_.

I hope to add more Folios to the blog as time goes on. This is the first and I am eager to see how well these Thoroughbreds perform.

New Playa

DownloadI was looking around for a Windows desktop blogging client.  I found one that I really like.  It is called BlogJet.  Pretty powerful program, easy to use, simple setup.  Cost is a bit high, around $45.  That seems to be the only negative I can find so far.

Sci0103jump_A1It didn’t take long for me to decide that Google Blogger was too limited for my tastes. Like any good band-wagoner, I jumped on the back of the Wordpress train. I have a programming background so that wasn’t my original reservation. My original problem was that I wanted to do as little as possible to get this site up and moving. My artistic abilities are rather limited as well.

Nevertheless, here we are with a new site and a new domain. I found a template that I liked and there was no looking back. If anyone else out there is thinking about setting up their own site, then just take a look around. There are tons of informational sites.

I am planning to stop by the bookstore tonight and pick up WordPress For Dummies as a reference guide. I just like having a book around to thumb through as a reference. I will give a review of it at a later date.
