I was doing some stock research last week when I noticed a new tool on Google Finance page. A stock screener! In the usual Google fashion, the stock screen is really easy to use and pretty darn powerful. Let’s take a look at this nice little tool.
The Google Stock Screener has a very nice user interface. The default search has a criteria, Min, Max and Company Distribution. The criteria consist of Market Cap, P/E Ratio, Dividend Yield, and 52w Price Change. You can select a Min or Max for each Criteria. The killer field to me is the Company Distribution. This field has small grippers on either end that allow you to adjust the Max and Min by the Company Distribution.

Google also lets you add new criteria to your search. Click the “Add criteria” link to see more available fields. Here the fields are sorted so you can find what you are looking for easily. You can also remove fields from the search by choosing the “X” on the right side of the Max field.
The search results are displayed in a table format with each search criteria in a column. You may sort by a particular criteria by clicking on the column header. Adjusting your search criteria dynamically updates the list as well. You can further refine the search results by sector and exchange and the right side of the column header.

The next time you are searching for stocks, you may want to give the Google Stock Screener a try. I did and it caused me to buy a new dividend stock. Suburban Propane Partners (SPH) came up with my search criteria and after reviewing its financials, I made the buy. Happy hunting.
