Taxing Situations (Week 16)

TaxA friend of mine has created problems for himself with the IRS.  It is nothing serious.  However, I thought it would be a good idea to remind people that the tax deadline is approaching.  With this in mind, you should also take care if you are preparing your taxes yourself.  You see my friend forgot one of his 1099–DIV forms.  He has already filed his taxes.  This means he will have to file a 1040X to correct the mistake.  Like I said, nothing serious but a pain nevertheless.  Please make sure you have all your tax paperwork in order.

The Thoroughbred Folio came roaring back this week.  Again we breach the one hundred dollar loss barrier and make our way ever  closer to the break-even point.  The dividends are really rolling in now.  This week we had eight more companies paying out a total of $5.43.  Comerica (CMA) and Regions Financial (RF) contributed $1.19 and $1.18, respectively.  Again I must reiterate the fact that if these banks can hold on to their dividend rates through this turmoil, then they should be awesome long term investments.

Nucor continues to dominate the Folio, up more than 20% since inception.  VF Corp and KeyCorp continue to hold strong as well.  Gannett paid out a dividend this week, but that wasn’t enough to keep it out of the bottom spot.  Leggett & Platt and Consolidated Edison round out the bottom performers.  It is interesting to note this is the first week in a long time since Synovus and Total System Services haven’t been in the top or bottom.
